The River Rat of the Year award was established in 1984. The purpose of the award is to recognize a living-member in good standing that has given sustained and above average support to the goals and mission of the River Rats. The RROTY award is for significant and consistent contribution to the River Rat organization for a prolonged period of time, not for a single accomplishment and is presented at the annual reunion.
